More information

This course has an in-depth look at the concept of defence mechanisms. Defence mechanisms can be thought of as the protectors of the psyche. Their purpose is to mediate unconscious feelings and thoughts with the outside world. Sometimes these ways of mediating our feelings and thoughts can be helpful, but they can also cause us to interact with the world in a maladaptive way.

First, we will be looking at Freud's psychoanalytic theory and the structure of the psyche. The second module will address the purpose of defences as well as the different types of defences we commonly use. Finally, we will look at ways that negative mechanisms are addressed.
